We are thrilled to announce the reopening of the red doors for in-person classes starting September 7, 2021!
This long awaited moment comes after a season of learning curves for all of us. Our community is strong, creative and camera ready.
Join us in the studio where the magic of live theater becomes a reality again. We have learned so much over the last 20 months. Now, we have taken that knowledge and pivoted our class structure to continue to master the art of the Zoom audition and callback, as well as explore the multi-layered, technical art of scene study.
Registration is now open! Check out our newly reimagined www.sfstheatre.com for details and our new monthly newsletter for updates.
In the meantime, here are our recommendations for what shows, music and art have been inspiring us...
Hollywood Fringe Festival The Hollywood Fringe Festival 2021 is happening at SFS Theatre! We are thrilled to welcome back Theatre Asylum and Combined Artform for the 11th Hollywood Fringe Festival. Theatre Asylum is presenting 16 in-person shows from comedy to drama to musicals, several Zoom only shows PLUS we are bringing back Asylum International House! This year we will be streaming 6+ shows from around the world, including Africa, Australia, Brazil and Canada. These shows will be performed live or on a delayed stream at SFS Theatre August 12th - 29th.
Inspiration we love:
The Underground Railroad. A genre-bending series of will and survival that centers around a young woman named Cora who makes an amazing discovery in her attempt to break free from slavery. This breathtaking story is based on the novel by Colson Whitehead and has been adapted and directed by Barry Jenkins. Highly recommended. Watch on Amazon Prime here.
Clairo, a young female singer songwriter who began gaining musical notoriety at 13 with her viral videos. She has just released her second album at 22 years old. Listen to Sling here.
First Cow, is written and directed by Kelly Reichardt, who is known for her minimalist films, many of which deal with working class characters in small, rural communities. Voted Best Film by the 2020 New York Film Critics, it was named one of the ten best films of 2020 by the National Board of Review. Stream this moving, poetic portrait of an unlikely friendship between two outsiders in the 1820’s Oregon Territory on Hulu.
Immersive Van Gogh This exhibition transforms the iconic paintings of Vincent van Gogh into a fully immersive experience. The installation pulls from some of the post-Impressionist's most recognizable pieces, including The Bedroom, Sunflowers and, yes, The Starry Night. The exhibition is located at the former home of Amoeba Music, 6400 Sunset Boulevard. Learn more here
We are now renting the theatre for rehearsals, shows & screenings. Please see our website for pricing, theatre details & Covid regulations.
A note to our beloved LA Theatre scene,
The Los Angeles theatre community is facing many challenges after a lengthy shutdown. Small theatre in LA has a long history and vibrant subculture of experimentation bringing us countless inspiring shows over the years. We would like to extend our stage to all those who have lost their creative spaces.
Our doors are always open to you.
